-----------------------------------
Update: I really, really appreciate all of the new visitors coming over from Pinterest, but before you leave a comment asking me where I got my boots or the lace to make this project, please take a moment to actually read the post (especially if you are a no-reply blogger or anonymous). All of the information is right here in the post~
------------------------------------
Here's what you need:
Materials:
-extra wide elasticized lace
-thread and needle
-sewing machine or serger
-scissors (not shown, why do I always forget one thing??)
-optional: buttons, bows, ribbon, etc.
Steps:
1) Wrap your lace around your calf, just under your knee. Don't worry about doing it over top of your pants, you're going to wear these on top anyway.
2) Cut two lengths of lace to fit.
3) With right sides together, sew or serge the raw edges of your lace together.
Please ignore the messy stitches. My serger was on a rampage. |
4) Iron your seam towards one side and turn right side out.
If you want to stop now you can and there you go, you've completed the whole thing in about 60 seconds flat!
If you want to add a little bit more interest, read on.
5) Decide if you want your seam to be on the inside of your leg or at the back and then add some pretty buttons or bows or other embellishments. Just make sure to keep it towards the top of the sock so that it won't cause any discomfort inside your boot. Flat buttons work best. I put mine on the side but you could put them right down the seam at the back too!
Tah dah!
So pretty! |
This is also a great scrap buster if you just have a bit of lace left over from another project. Have fun making your own and have a crafty week~

**Update: a few people have asked where I got my boots....they're actually a few years old but I'm pretty sure I picked them up at a shoe store in Canada called Spring. I don't think they have them anymore but there are a few styles that are similar~
The lace is from the bargain bin at my local fabric store. If you don't live where I live this is pretty useless information. So just do a google search on "Wide Elasticized Lace" or go to Wholeport (link in my sidebar), sometimes they have it.

Ha! Those are so cute. Love the addition of the buttons. Do the lace cuffs stay in place pretty well?
Great idea thanks Frances
I love these... Oh to be small enough to wear knee high boots.... I have hefty calves. Thbbbbt. But these are so cute!
Cranberry Morning....yes, they do stay up. Just make sure to stretch your lace while you're measuring it around your leg so that it's snug~
I love this idea much more than the sweaters because these only peep out of your boots (which are adorable by the way). Came over from 5days5ways. can't wait to see more of your projects
These are so cute and they look so easy! I think I need to make some to dress up my boots!
PJ, don't let the height of your boots stop you. I'm going to make another set to wear with my shorter booties too! They'll be smaller 'cause they'll be at the bottom of my calf but I think that they'll still be cute. Give it a shot, nothing to lose but a few inches of lace~
Very pretty, I've got to make some of these!!
Tania
These look great! love the look the lace gives :)

These are cute! I might have to make some for my daughter.
I love this idea! I really like the black version -- I'll have to try this. Now I just need to get over to M&J Trimming!
Love the lace version! And those buttons are the perfect touch. Pinning!

Cute way to dress up an outfit (and not have to worry about socks matching either!). Thanks for linking to Craftastic Monday at Sew Can Do:)
I don't know how it never dawned on me to just make my own! I've seen them all over and when I look on Etsy for them it just seems far too expensive for something so simple. Thanks for the tutorial :)
I love lace, & these socks are adorable! Thanks so much for sharing at Sunday Round Up! I hope you have a great week!,

Yes, I still say somethin somethin but its more like sumptin sumptin ;-) These are so cute! I've been making them out of sweater sleeves and crocheting short legwarmers to use in just the top. So glad this trend is still going strong!!!!
Wow, these are amazing. I am not sure my hubby would let me leave out the house! Super cute!
These are so cute. I have a link party on Wednesdays, and I would love it if you would link this and any other posts. It is called Wednesdays Adorned From Above Link Party. It runs from Wednesday to Sundays.

Super cute! Where are your brown boots from?
These are so dang cute!! I'm going to have to make some for my girls!
Thanks for sharing @'Sew Cute Tuesday'. I'll be featuring you tomorrow, so be sure to stop by and grab a 'featured' button!
Very pretty!
I had to come ask what kind of boots those are. You look like you have pretty thin legs like me and I have the hardest time finding boots that aren't huge. Where are those from?
Very cute! I love the boots too. Please tell us where they're from!
PJ, I too suffer from larger calves. I have looked and looked for the last several years for a pair of boots that would fit me, this year I finally did. There are quite a few brands out there with extended calf sizes. Check them out. I started my search with Macy's. They had boots starting at 69 bucks, there are boots for any budget. Good luck!
Those are so adorable...
I'm off to buy lace, as there's none in my fabric stash...
Love. It reminds me of crocheted ones I saw on Pinterest last year, but I can't crochet, but I can sew.
:) Pinned and featured.
Have a lovely weekend, Tamara.

Love this idea!! I have a hard time finding boots that fit my skinny chicken legs! Where on earth did you get those cute brown boots???
Never mind!! I just saw your update at the bottom of the page! sorry!
Can you tell me where you bought this lace. I'm am having a hard time finding pretty or good quality lace like this. Thanks, Krity
Krity, you're account is set to 'no reply' so I have to reply to you here.....This lace was actually from the bargain bin at Fabricland. I bought it more than a year ago. I think it was 3 metres for $1.00 or something crazy like that (I stocked up on loads of colours). It was a steal of a deal~ Keep looking, I'm sure you'll find something. You need less than half a metre so go ahead and splurge on the good stuff :)
I love these but they don't start slipping down into the boot as the day goes on? Just double checking...
where are those boots fromm?
Anonymous....please read the post for the answer to your question.
Other Anonymous...As mentioned above, if you pull the lace snugly around your leg it shouldn't fall down.
Other Anonymouses...I can't reply to you directly if you post your comments as anonymous or 'no-reply' so make sure you check back here for a response, however, please take the time to actually READ the post to make sure I haven't already answered your question above.
These are so beautiful! I am just not crafty at all/enough to make them. If you ever decide to make this a business, I'll buy them in every color!
Uhm, just ran across this.. and I love it. I also love that you sound like me and my sister - who avidly use a lil 'somethin somethin' ALL the time. =D
Needless to say, totally following you now. ;)
SO pretty and simple! I love lace and I love boot socks so these are a PERFECT combo! :)

So beautiful and simple! Love how the white lace compliments the brown leather. I was wondering what kind of boots those are or where I could find the brand. I would love to try that with the brown leather and I'm trying to find boots that fit my calves! So pretty!
This is ingenious. Thanks so much for this!
Where did you put elastic? Long ways
Christine...I didn't add elastic anywhere. The lace itself is elasticized, it's stretchy, you don't need to add any elastic at all.
If you can't find reasonably priced stretch lace this might not be a bad alternative though. It will bunch up your lace and it won't lay as flat but it might still be pretty.
Have fun experimenting~
So cute. Where did you get your boots and what brand are they. They are adorable and look like the calf circumference is small, I can never find boots that are tight on my legs.
Madee
This idea is so smart! I want to make it right now :) Pinned it and make it soon!
Thank you for sharing!
Hanni
I can't find this trim anywhere!!! Please help!
Hi Lauren...did you know that your account is set to 'no-reply'?? Others have asked about a source though, so I'll answer you here and hope that others see.
Try Wholeport.com (http://www.wholeport.com/cate/stretch-lace.html). They have stretch lace at excellent prices.
Good luck!
I just LOVE these, but I live in the sticks LOL!! So I have to order my lace online, can you tell me how wide you used? I was guessing about 3 inches but wanted to double check before I actually placed my order!
Thanks so much :)
I actually tried sewing lace to the top of a pair of socks today and they came out terrible. It just doesn't lay right. This is a perfect alternative to spend $20 on a pair of socks. Yay!
This may sound crazy, but it seems like lots of people aren't able to find stretch lace. I have an old pair of panties that have stretch lace on top. I think I'll cut them up. Just a thought.
Love this idea! Thanks!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Love the post. Love your blog. I've been looking for lace everywhere (for undies, actually) and appreciate the help. These will look great with my boots. :D
Brilliant! Darling!
Thanks so much for sharing this, they are so cute! Found them yesterday on Pinterest and had to make some just today :) My lace actually was just cheap from a cut H&M shirt, but I'll definitely watch out for better one to make some more.
If you wanna see mine, here's the link: http://luftmasche.blogspot.de/2013/03/spitze.html
Is this socks is designed to cover whole leg upto knee or just calf portion that is shown outside the Wide calf boots in the picture?
Where do you find this type of lace? I have searched all fabric stores in town and not had any luck.
These are fabulous! I love that little touch of feminine peeking out of the boot top! And so simple! I think I'm in love...
Awesome.. can't wait to give it a try!
SUUUCH a cute idea! love these! where did you find lace like this?
Yes where on earth did you get those boots!!! I've been looking for some exactly like those!
I absolutely love these!!! But I was wondering where you bought your lace from??
You can find stretch lace on E-Bay! Hooray!
Super cute and lovely!
I LOVE this idea! Thanks for sharing how to make them. I am going to try these in a bright colored stretchy t-shirt fabric that I have.
