Update: I really, really appreciate all of the new visitors coming over from Pinterest, but before you leave a comment asking me where I got my boots or the lace to make this project, please take a moment to actually read the post (especially if you are a no-reply blogger or anonymous). Here's what you need:
Materials:
-extra wide elasticized lace
-thread and needle
-sewing machine or serger
-scissors (not shown, why do I always forget one thing??)
-optional: buttons, bows, ribbon, etc.
Steps:
1) Wrap your lace around your calf, just under your knee. Don't worry about doing it over top of your pants, you're going to wear these on top anyway.
2) Cut two lengths of lace to fit.
3) With right sides together, sew or serge the raw edges of your lace together.

4) Iron your seam towards one side and turn right side out.
If you want to stop now you can and there you go, you've completed the whole thing in about 60 seconds flat!
If you want to add a little bit more interest, read on.
5) Decide if you want your seam to be on the inside of your leg or at the back and then add some pretty buttons or bows or other embellishments. Just make sure to keep it towards the top of the sock so that it won't cause any discomfort inside your boot. Flat buttons work best. I put mine on the side but you could put them right down the seam at the back too!

This is also a great scrap buster if you just have a bit of lace left over from another project. Have fun making your own and have a crafty week~

**Update: a few people have asked where I got my boots....they're actually a few years old but I'm pretty sure I picked them up at a shoe store in Canada called Spring. I don't think they have them anymore but there are a few styles that are similar~
The lace is from the bargain bin at my local fabric store. If you don't live where I live this is pretty useless information. So just do a google search on "Wide Elasticized Lace" or go to Wholeport (link in my sidebar), sometimes they have it.

Cranberry Morning....yes, they do stay up. Just make sure to stretch your lace while you're measuring it around your leg so that it's snug~

PJ, don't let the height of your boots stop you. I'm going to make another set to wear with my shorter booties too! They'll be smaller 'cause they'll be at the bottom of my calf but I think that they'll still be cute. Give it a shot, nothing to lose but a few inches of lace~

PJ, I too suffer from larger calves. I have looked and looked for the last several years for a pair of boots that would fit me, this year I finally did. There are quite a few brands out there with extended calf sizes. Check them out. I started my search with Macy's. They had boots starting at 69 bucks, there are boots for any budget. Good luck!

Krity, you're account is set to 'no reply' so I have to reply to you here.....This lace was actually from the bargain bin at Fabricland. I bought it more than a year ago. I think it was 3 metres for $1.00 or something crazy like that (I stocked up on loads of colours). It was a steal of a deal~ Keep looking, I'm sure you'll find something. You need less than half a metre so go ahead and splurge on the good stuff :)
I love these but they don't start slipping down into the boot as the day goes on? Just double checking...

Christine...I didn't add elastic anywhere. The lace itself is elasticized, it's stretchy, you don't need to add any elastic at all.
If you can't find reasonably priced stretch lace this might not be a bad alternative though. It will bunch up your lace and it won't lay as flat but it might still be pretty.

I actually tried sewing lace to the top of a pair of socks today and they came out terrible. It just doesn't lay right. This is a perfect alternative to spend $20 on a pair of socks. Yay!
This may sound crazy, but it seems like lots of people aren't able to find stretch lace. I have an old pair of panties that have stretch lace on top. I think I'll cut them up. Just a thought.
