Go into any fashion store right now and you'll find a rack of kimono tops just like this one.
I'd use a machine to get a cleaner finish on the stitching but if you don't have a machine this is a fun way to dip your toe into the sewing pool. You could also add fringe or lace to the edges to really personalize it.
