The Taj Mahal is one of those things that you see in so many pictures that you wonder if it will have any impact at all when you see it in person. Luckily, it does not disappoint. I think the reason that it's so beautiful is due to 3 main aspects. The great big open sky that acts as a perfect backdrop behind it, its perfect symmetry, and even though there are 1000's of man hours put into the inlaid marble and filigree, there is an incredible simplicity to it.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that the whole thing was constructed out of an act of pure love. Shah Jahan designed and built (completed in 1653) the Taj Mahal to commemorate his favourite wife who died after giving birth to their 14th child. Now the Shah and his wife are entombed side by side, forever.
